Marching is a large, planned protest or demonstration. Marches are efficient techniques for drawing attention to a problem and putting pressure on policymakers. Marches often employ slogans, banners, and other visual aids to spread the word about a cause, and they can include speeches and singing.

Activists use boycotts to have a negative economic effect on a target, such as a company involved in unethical business practices. Similar to marches, boycotts are most effective when many people join.

Craftivism mixes activism with crafts, allowing activists to express themselves creatively and draw attention to a problem or issue with a graphic T-shirt, a sign, or another craft.

The 350 Organizations Fights for Reduced Use of Fossil Fuels

Founded in 2008, 350.org is a large and diverse environmental organization focusing on online campaigning and physical protests to oppose the exploration of new oil, gas, and coal. It also advocates for social license revoking for the fossil fuel industries, alongside the withdrawal of funding for the companies in that industry.

One difference between 350.org and other organizations fighting climate change is that it adopts a more aggressive end to fossil fuel use and promotes a community led approach toward renewable energy. The 350 name comes from the organization’s efforts to ensure that the atmospheric carbon dioxide remains below 350 parts per million. As of 2021, the average number was 414 parts per million, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Global Monitoring Lab.

Over the years, the organization’s assertive stance and approach have seen some companies divesting from fossil fuels and governments adopting progressive policies on fossil fuels. An approach favored by the organization are mass protests, mainly before global climate change conferences or bills and policies.

The notable ones include a mobilization before the COP15 in Copenhagen in 2010, the Global Work Party in the same year, and efforts to halt the Keystone XL, a pipeline in North America. One of the largest, the Global Climate Strike, saw a record 7.6 million people take to the streets in more than 6,000 actions and 185 countries to protest against the slow response to climate change.
